Akin to the New Testament idea of putting off the old self is the OT concept of dedicating to destruction things God either directly commanded to be offensive or indirectly commanded His people to avoid. Yet for many of the same reasons OT Israel did not dedicate things to destruction, are the same excuses Christians use to maintain and entertain pet, personal and social sins. We pretend to have gained the upper hand over so sin so instead of removing it and whatever temps you to it, you keep it around only to falter to it later. It’s no wonder that things are both so bad (moral decay) and so good (true gospel really stands out now) as they are today. Oh that Christians would deepen their hatred of personal sin and learn to lament, rebuke and pray when they see it in others.
